Mapping Brussels

The Brussels-Capital Region is made up of 19 municipalities and 724 statistical districts. According to the sources of data, we deal with statistics for regions, districts and statistical districts.

19 municipalities

The first map shows the geographical boundaries of the 19 municipalities.

Each district has an NIS code and a post code, apart from the City of Brussels municipality, where 4 post codes differentiate Brussels (1000), Laeken (1020), Neder-Over-Heembeek (1120) and Haren (1130).

724 statistical districts

A statistical district is the smallest administrative unit for which socio-economic and administrative data are available. Each municipality can be divided into several statistical districts. Data per statistical district enables the best possible identification of differences between municipalities. In 2002, a district comprised on average 1,350 inhabitants. A statistical district should not be confused with the standard meaning given to districts which, in the eyes of the inhabitants and users, are only vaguely defined.

Statistical district are mapped out and numbered on the second map. The codes, name, population and population density of each statistical district are listed in the attached document (Statistical district list).

It is also possible to identify which statistical district is home to a particular address, by consulting the geoloc website(http://geowebgis.irisnet.be/webgis/), showing streets and numbers. The code and name of the statistical district are shown in the results, which appear below the search box.

118 districts

As municipalities may be too heterogeneous to allow useful analyses and statistical districts rather too small for drawing certain sensitive data, 118 districts were defined as part of the Brussels regional district monitoring project.

The Brussels regional district monitoring project is a dynamic and interactive instrument for follow up of the districts of the Brussels Capital Region. By way of maps, charts and diagrams the situation of the different districts is shown in terms of demography, economy, housing, environment,...

Though the boundaries of these districts always respect the limits of statistical districts, they do not always follow the boundaries of municipalities.
