Vaccine coverage indicators for children aged 18 to 24 months

The main source of data is the Vaccine coverage survey of children aged 18 to 24 months. A new survey has been organised in 2012. The 2012 report is available in French and Dutch.

L' Office de la Naissance et de l'Enfance (ONE) and Kind & Gezin also hold data on the population which is monitored by their services.

Key messages of the 2012 immunisation coverage survey in Brussels Region

  • Immunisation coverage are similar to those observed in 2006, except for Pneumococcus which has now reached 90.1%.
  • MMR coverage reaches the critical threshold herd immunity Complete coverage of Rotavirus reached 77.2%
  • Although the hexavalent vaccine is well established since 2004, there was a 9% fall between the first and last dose administered at age 15 months.
  • Vaccination coverage of children attending public preventive programmes for infants (ONE or K & G) still reaches 90% for recommended vaccines. This threshold is not reached for children attending private practitioners, except for Hexa1 and Pn1.
  • Four out of five children attend publicly provided services; ONE or K & G (including irregularly)
  • The refusal of vaccination by parents is very low, between 1.8 and 2.2% for MMR, between 1.8 and 2.4% for Meningococcal C, less than 1.9% for Pneumo, and 2% for Hexavalent. The refusal of Rota-virus is around 5%.
  • The recommended simultaneous administrations that was poor in 2006 reached 73% and even 89% for the first injections.
  • 19% of parents did not get the desired mode of day care for their child.
  • 28% of parents say they are not completely satisfied with the information received on the vaccination.

Conclusions

This fourth immunization coverage survey highlights the importance of regular monitoring of this key indicator for monitoring the program.

It has offered a lot of grain to grind to improve the overall management of the vaccination in both aspects of promotion and operationalization.

It has demonstrated how this preventive program takes into account and smoothen social health inequalities as long as funding is secured.
